NACOM originated from Jesi, a city in Italy. They had the goal of playing some Melodic Death with Progressive influences, similar to DARK TRANQUILLITY and OPETH, which are two bands that have influenced them.
Even though the NACOM is based out of Italy, the sound on the record is decidedly Swedish, with the melodies mixed in to the riffs the only way the Swedes could have done it. The song structures are very open-ended, forgoing the typical "verse-chorus-verse-chorus" template adopted by countless bands, so the band has a good deal of riffing on the album and the songs twist and turn in small unexpected ways.
Now, even though the guitar work is extremely well done and the song structures are creative, there are a few things that bother me. For one thing, the band tries to cram as many genres and influences in each of their song as possible, and the jumps and shifts in style get distracting and makes the songs lose their focus. The other problem I have is with the balancing of the sounds. The rhythm guitars are too low, while the drums have this weird synthetic sound to them and the vocals and keyboards overpower the mix. Speaking of the keyboards…for some reason, the sound the keyboard player went for sounds like it was straight out of the 80s. It sounds VERY much like a Midi sampler than an actual instruments, and that makes the music a bit comical, but not in a good way.
Well, despite all my complaining about "My Tomb", this little 3 song demo shows a band that can write stellar riffs, explore atypical song structures and hold my interest throughout an entire song (or most of) while mixing it up.
There is much potential in NACOM.

I NACOM sono originari di Jesi, una città italiana. Il loro obiettivo è quello di suonare del death melodico con influenze progressive, simile ai DARK TRANQUILLITY e agli OPETH, che sono due tra le loro influenze.
Sebbene i NACOM siano italiani, il suono della registrazione è decisamente svedese, con le melodie mescolate ai riff nella migliore tradizione svedese. La struttura delle canzoni è molto aperta, dimenticando la tipica scaletta "strofa-ritornello-strofa-ritornello" adottata da un numero infinito di gruppi, e grazie a questo la band ha un buon numero di riff nell'album e le canzoni svoltano spesso in modi inaspettati.
Ora, sebbene il lavoro delle chitarre sia estremamente accurato e la struttura delle canzoni creativa, ci sono un paio di cose che mi hanno infastidito. Per primo, la band prova a riempire il più possibile le loro canzoni con diversi generi e influenze, e i salti e le variazioni di stile distraggono e fanno perdere la concentrazione sulle canzoni stesse. L'altro problema riguarda il bilanciamento dei suoni. Le chitarre ritmiche sono troppo basse, mentre la batteria ha questo strano suono sintetico e la voce e le tastiere risaltano troppo nel mixaggio. A proposito delle tastiere... per qualche ragione, il suono ricercato dal tastierista viene direttamente dagli anni '80. Suona DAVVERO come un midi sampler piuttosto che come un vero strumento, e questo rende la musica un po' comica, ma non in modo positivo.
Bene, a parte queste critiche a "My tomb", questo piccolo demo di 3 canzoni mostra una band capace di scrivere riff stellari esplorando strutture atipiche e catturando la mia attenzione per tutte le canzoni (più o meno).
C'è molto potenziale nei Nacom.
